The Anti Social Behavior of Social Media
I have decided that my
topic will be about Social Media and weather it is a positive influence on
society or weather it is a negative influence on Society. I am probably a
perfect example of a Social Media Addict if such a term exists. I am on at
least three different Social Media Site’s and engaged on a daily basis with
people on these sites, almost as reliant on them as I am on my phone. Yet
weather I believe I benefit from it is questionable. In this discussion blog, I
am hoping to gain more of an understanding of why I’ve become so dependant on
it, but actually learn more about the thing’s that I seem to be putting so much
time into. I hope that you feel free to comment, give your own opinions or
share experience’s and advice.
The Many Face’s of Social
Media
I spend at least 2
hour’s if not more on Social Media Site’s every day, and Lately I’ve been
starting to question exactly what do I benefit from this, it has become a
routine in my every day life, that to me is extremely unhealthy. The Internet can be viewed as an
entirely different world, a place where you can create and entirely new you,
editing tools help smoothen out any fine lines, or pimples you have, there are
editing app’s (applications) that allow you to change the colour of your skin,
eye’s, hair and even give you longer eyelashes’. The more like’s you get or retweets the more popular you
are, you can even interact with your favourite celebrities. One of the Biggest
and probably most appealing aspect’s of the internet is the access to
anonymity, the bait that eventually capture’s most of us. You now can say
whatever you please, and not (if you choose) deal with the consequences. Anonymity is a increasingly popular
trend, Website’s such as Tumblr even promote the use of Anonymity. Tumblr have created an option when you
are viewing somebody’s page to ask a question anonymously, you can only imagine
some of the things said. There is a certain power in Anonymity, although it
allows you to have and state an opinion that in reality might be too difficult
for you to voice, it is also extremely dangerous. It allows people to say
whatever they want, and that’s when I believe people show their cyber faces.
Things that society has tried so hard to Control such as Racism, Equal Rights,
Discrimination etc..Resurface its ugly head on the Internet. I do however believe that as all things
there is a good and bad to everything, the Internet is an ever growing, and ever-advancing
aspect of today’s society, and it would be insane to try and fight it, BUT
MODERATION PEOPLE. How far until it’s all too far, and reality become’s less important
then cyberspace.
I have included some
rather interesting website article’s if you would like to have a look at other
people’s opinion’s and point’s of view.
This one is rather hilarious:

I also like to use social media apps with my ipad and computer. It is fun to use as I can communicate with my friends and close people even if I am in NZ but with Korean people. I thought this is good to use for the first time but I read news that people can watch us for other purpose like Facebook or twitter give some information to CIA or FBI for investigation. Also, it is issue that people use anonymous in Korea. People say whatever they want to on the web and celebrities read those words and decided to suicide because they were suffer from bad comments. Government is trying to ban that behaviour with law but still many people disagreed with this policy as this is against freedom of speech. Interesting topic!

ReplyDeleteI think that this is just a phase to be honest. More and more people are just using social media to replace email and to share their pictures.
ReplyDeleteAlso I would like to point out that the facebook style social media is only popular in the western world. For Japan, it's BBS and for China it's blogging.
Also this is slowly starting to be replaced by applications similar to skype etc.. that do it all for you and people spend less time scrolling through messengers. Think of skype + facebook combined.
I use facebook etc.. to invite people and organize parties which lead to people meeting up and being social so I'm not really sure how this makes us anti-social... You are focusing too much on one stereo type in my opinion. Try looking at a broader range of people.
10 years ago using computers was considered anti-social...
